10 Things You Should Know About Pugs

1. They want to be with you. All the time.
I always hear people with young kids say that they don’t get to go to the bathroom by themselves. With a pug? Same thing. They tend to be pretty attached.
So basically, if you want a dog that stays off the furniture or sleeps on the floor rather than your bed, you may have a little trouble with a pug. And you may have to deal with a bit of separation anxiety.
2. They’re low energy….although not when they’re puppies.
Even for a low-energy breed, a puppy is still a puppy.
3. They shed.
Expect a need to vacuum twice a week, at least!
4. Expect some sort of eye issue at some point.
As adorable as a set of bulgy eyes are on a pug, they do come with risks – they can get irritated and injured easily. Also of concern for pugs is proptosis, where the eyeball bulges out of it’s socket. Fortunately, we haven’t had this issue yet, but if it does it requires immediate vet attention.
5. Be weary of warm weather.
Because of their short noses, they’re prone to heat stroke and similar issues – prolonged exposure could lead to organ failure.
6. They are extremely motivated by food.
Pugs love to eat! With some breeds you can use a toy as a reward in training, but with pugs food will always work best. But they are prone to obesity, so you have to be careful with how much you feed them.
7. Look up what ‘reverse sneezing’ is to save yourself a heart attack and unnecessary rush to the vet.
Basically, it’s a weird phenomenon where a dog forcefully inhales air over and over again, making gasping noises and basically sound like they’re choking.
It seems to be generally agreed on that it happens when the throat or soft palate becomes irritated.
8. They will not stop licking you (or anything else).
It’s a little weird, but it’s funny.
9. They’re pretty go-with-the-flow.
They are pretty happy to spend most of their time passed out on the couch but on your busy days they're happy to spend the day up and about. Basically, they're happy to do whatever you're doing.
10. They are sociable, adorable animals.
Pugs love people. Pugs love other dogs. Pugs love babies. Pugs love cats. They love almost everything and everyone!
